COVID 19 and California Community Colleges by Lawrence Su

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation, with 115 colleges serving more than 2.1 million students annually. Our students are some of the most diverse in their needs and adversities. Many of them are diligently climbing the ladder of higher education, pouring their valuable years in the pursuit of the American dream. However, COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of many of our students who already are facing some of the biggest challenges like housing, transportation, textbooks, food, and other necessities. Our students consist of vulnerable populations that are most at risk of homelessness and food insecurity. COVID-19 has only unveiled the ongoing and underlying issues that have often been ignored. That is why we need large political and education reform that will prepare us for the next crisis. That is why we need to empower the “community” in community colleges, so that when the next crisis hits, we’ll be ready.
