Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen meets with Chinese female economists and entrepreneurs

The Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen concluded her visit to China. This was Yellen’s first visit to China as Treasury Secretary (she is the first woman to head the Federal Reserve), and she is also the second senior U.S. official to visit China after U.S. Secretary of State Blinken last month.

During her visit, The Treasury Secretary met with several Chinese officials, but also hosted a dinner with six Chinese female economists and entrepreneurs. The meeting was organized to highlight gender diversity. According to the sources at the Treasury, the meeting gave Yellen a chance to “interact with a number of people kind of outside the normal policy structure.”

During the meeting, the Treasury Secretary Yellen spoke to the attendees about the career development of young female economists and if there is a gender disadvantage. Likewise, she wanted to know how does childbearing affect women’s career development. The attendees also discussed so what kind of policies can really help women.

The Treasury Secretary spoke to the attendees about fertility and population issues, and how they impact the China’s real estate market. She expressed hope that economic and trade ties between the United States and China can be promoted in a friendly manner. Yellen also touched upon the bankruptcy of Silicon Valley Bank and called it a regulatory failure.
