Fareed Zakaria on “Spy Balloon” and “Banning TikTok”

Fareed Rafiq Zakaria (born 20 January 1964) is an Indian-American journalist, political commentator, and author. He is the host of CNN‘s Fareed Zakaria GPS and writes a weekly paid column for The Washington Post. He has been a columnist for Newsweek, editor of Newsweek International, and an editor at large of Time.
Recently he called out the ‘Irrational’ response by US to Chinese balloon” and on “Banning TikTok” on his popular weekly “Sunday Fareed Zakaria GPS” program.
Here are some viewer comments regarding the Balloon Gate incident:
  • Zakaria is one of the few news reporters left in the Mainstream media who can see clearly what Washington is planning.
  • Thank you, Mr. Zakaria, for being such rational voice. It is sad to see that US domestic politics no longer stops at the border. No politician seems to care how this kind of overreaction is seen by the people who live outside US media bubble.
  • In the current anti-China climate in Washington, it is of no surprise to the politicians and Pentagon officials to blow the thing out of proportion and to escalate the tension: it is part of domestic politics in Washington. Fareed seems to be the lone rational voice over the matter.
  • This is serious stuff… Sure it was just a balloon, but next time it might be a paper airplane!
Regarding the “Banning TikTok” incident, Zakaria explains why he thinks the proposed federal ban on TikTok is a “frightening Orwellian law,” and should send chills down every American’s spine!
Here are some viewers’ comments:
  • This is a really good summary of the pros and cons of this issue. And I have to agree right at the start you point out the obvious. Why does our government allow corporations to dig so deep into our personal data for their profit. Screw that. If we had comprehensive data protection, TikTok wouldn’t be an issue. In fact, none of these companies would be an issue. Thank you for putting this together. Presenting it in a very thoughtful way and articulating this situation very well. Kudos
  • ………..There’s lots of examples of effective privacy legislation out there (Europe’s GDPR for example) that could be used as a starting point. The real issue is that the on sale of customer private information is a very lucrative business and US legislators consistently fail with the Ethics vs Money question.
  • …………The problem is that Google, Facebook and others hate this, because they engage in the same practices that TikTok does in the United States. It should be about protecting the privacy of individuals against the abuses of corporations as well as governments.
We should be grateful that Zakaria is courageous to speak up.
He is a lone voice in the vast wilderness we call the mainstream media!
