Cheng Li-wen: Taiwan and Santa Clara May Be Small, But Both Are Full of Possibilities
Ding Ding TV, Calif. — During a recent visit to Silicon Valley, Taiwan Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen met with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor and highlighted the many similarities between Taiwan and Santa Clara, describing both as relatively small places with extraordinary energy, innovation, and global impact.
Cheng said that while listening to Mayor Gillmor’s introduction of Santa Clara, she was immediately reminded of Taiwan.
“Santa Clara is a small city full of possibilities, and Taiwan is the same,” Cheng said. “Although we are small in size, we are rich in talent, innovation, and opportunity.”
She pointed to Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Park, home to many of the world’s leading semiconductor and technology companies, as an example of how a relatively small region can become a global center of innovation. Cheng noted that Taiwan and Santa Clara share a common commitment to technology, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
Looking ahead, Cheng expressed optimism about future collaboration between Taiwan and Santa Clara in areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centers, investment, talent development, and advanced technology.
She emphasized Taiwan’s leadership in the global semiconductor industry and noted that recent investments by international technology companies, including NVIDIA, demonstrate the growing opportunities for cooperation in the AI era.
“Through greater integration and strategic collaboration, we can unlock even greater potential and create shared benefits for both sides,” Cheng said.
Beyond technology, Cheng described her visit to the United States as part of a broader effort to promote peace, dialogue, and regional prosperity. She shared her vision of transforming what was once viewed as the “First Island Chain” into a network connected by talent, technology, capital, markets, and cooperation.
“We hope to build a chain of peace and prosperity for the future,” she said.
Cheng also highlighted the importance of female leadership, noting that women are increasingly taking leadership roles in both Taiwan and the United States. She expressed hope that more women will continue to contribute to public service, innovation, and economic development.
Mayor Gillmor described Santa Clara as one of the most diverse cities in Silicon Valley, with more than 40 percent of residents born outside the United States and a large Asian population contributing to the city’s vibrancy and innovation.
She also recognized community leader Diana Ding for her efforts in bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, including Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, and many other communities through cultural and civic engagement.
Both leaders expressed interest in strengthening future exchanges and exploring opportunities for collaboration in technology, innovation, economic development, education, and people-to-people connections.
The conversation reflected a shared belief that innovation, diversity, and international cooperation can help create greater opportunities and prosperity for future generations.
