China Has Pivoted Exports Away From The US
By Joel Wong
China has notably shifted its export strategy in recent years, reducing its reliance on the US as its primary customer. Several developments demonstrate this pivot:
– The share of China’s exports going to the US has dropped dramatically, falling from about 20% in 2018 to just 10% by the second quarter of 2025[1]. Correspondingly, Chinese exports to the US declined by 10.7% year-over-year in the first half of 2025, while growth surged in regions like Africa (up 21.4%) and continued to accelerate to countries within ASEAN, the EU, and parts of Asia[2][3][1].
– ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) overtook all others to become China’s single largest trading partner region in 2024, with ASEAN absorbing 17.65% of Chinese exports in the first four months of 2025 alone[4][5]. Other emerging markets, such as Africa, Latin America, and India, have also become more significant recipients of Chinese goods[3][2][5].
– Strategic diversification efforts are underway: China is actively expanding its economic ties and trade relationships with developing economies to both offset US tariffs and strengthen long-term economic security[5][6]. Export growth to other Asian countries (notably Vietnam and Thailand), the EU, and Africa is offsetting the decline from the US[3][2].
– US-China trade is still significant, but far less dominant: The US remains a key export market for China in dollar terms, with $215.6 billion in Chinese exports in the first half of 2025, but its importance as a percentage of China’s export total has diminished compared to the robust growth seen with emerging regions[2][7][8].
In summary, China has actively pivoted away from relying on the US as its prime customer, redirecting export focus and commercial partnerships toward ASEAN, Africa, Latin America, and other developing regions. This marks a substantial change in global trade dynamics with lasting geopolitical implications[5][1][2].
