America’s China Strategy, With Rush Doshi

By Joel Wong

Rush Doshi, C.V. Starr Senior Fellow for Asia Studies and director of the China Strategy Initiative, sits down with James M. Lindsay to discuss how America should navigate its geopolitical rivalry with China. The Council on Foreign Relations is an American think tank specializing in U.S. foreign policy and international relations. Founded in 1921, it is an independent and nonpartisan nonprofit organization. CFR is based in New York City, with an additional office in Washington, D.C.

Rush Doshi is a prominent expert on U.S.-China relations, and has extensively discussed America’s strategy towards China. In his book, ‘The Long Game: China’s Grand Strategy to Displace American Order‘, Doshi argues that China has a long-term strategy to displace the U.S. from its position of global leadership. He outlines three sequential strategies that China has pursued: blunting American influence regionally, building Chinese influence regionally, and expanding Chinese influence globally.

Doshi emphasizes that the U.S. needs to recognize and respond to this grand strategy by strengthening its alliances, investing in technology, and maintaining a strong military presence in key regions. He also highlights the importance of engaging with China diplomatically to manage competition and avoid conflict.

You can find more details in his book and various interviews he has given on the topic.
