HP Wang will be remembered forever

HP Wang will be remembered forever

HP Wang(王显邦), a civic leader, great friend, mentor, and role model passed away at 3:30 pm Eastern Time Sep. 6th 2022 surrounded by his family. We will remember him forever.

HP originally came from Taiwan and was a distinguished engineer for General Electric for 34 years. He was an ASME Fellow and Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He held over 100 American and international patents and received the L. Kim Memorial Award and RD-100 Award. He was the first Chinese-American principal researcher at GE and was the Chief Technologist for Pratt & Whitney for two years before retiring.
HP established General Electric’s Asian PacificAmerican Forum (APAF) in 1997, which currently has 26 chapters and 6000 members. He was a board member of CLUSA and served as President and Board Chair of the Albany, NY Chinese Community Center, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME) Albany-Mohawk Chapter, and President of 80-20 Educational Foundation’s Board of Donors.
He tirelessly championed civic engagement among Asian Pacific Americans and civil rights for Asian Americans. During the VOVID, he organized a Stop Asian Hate rally in Albany, New York with over 1000 people attending, including two dozen elected officials.
We collected a few videos and some pictures of him on Ding Ding TV.  HP asked  “Three Ws”.  Those questions are so important to each one of us when we do what we do. This video was recorded at the 2019 National Civic Leadership Forum.

Why are you doing this?

Why are we doing this this way?

Why me? Why us? Can we achieve our goal by ourselves?

This video was recorded on Dec. 2nd, 2018 by Ding Ding TV at CLUSA Leadership Retreat. HP Wang presented the Civic Leadership Forums that his APAPA chapter has organized, as well as the other programs that this chapter has been providing, specifically their internship programs and the impact on the Asian-American community in Albany, New York.

This is indeed very sad news. He was a great friend and an inspiration for everyone. I  tried to contact him a week and half ago, his wife called back and told me he was too weak to take my call.
He led an exemplary life and personally I  will miss him tremendously. I keep thinking that we should do something.  Maybe a scholarship in his name to remember him by.
He was a modest and humble man. If he were alive, he’d turn down any thoughts of honoring him.
He was truly a gentleman and a scholar! I will miss calling him and asking for his advice on the phone.

I am very saddened by the passing HP. He is even now very special in my heart. I adore his wisdom, his generosity and passion for all of us.
On Saturday September 3, I was asked to say grace to begin our lunch on “we all belong right here” event. Openly I asked the lord to take care of him and everyone there responded amen afterward.
I treasured the love and friendship we build between us and this expanded around us.
The spark will make a fire and let it spread.
Thank you H. P. , my privilege to have this bonding. Rest well.
                                                                                                                                                                   ————Sandy Chau

It was indeed sad to learn that HP is gone.  We should remember all the good deeds that HP had left us.    I believe we all got to know HP through APAPA and as Joel said, with the departure of vincent, Victoria and now HP, the chapters of Ohio, Texas and Albany New York went with them.
It is hard to find a person like  HP who had worked for one company, GE Global Research for over 30 years.  He was one of the engineering leaders in jet engine development and his persistence in this field for so long led one to believe that he was equally persistent in devoting his time and efforts to community services.  When I discovered Michelle Wu as one of the rising stars in Boston a couple of years ago( as most of you did), HP called me a few times to pool the support together, which I was happy to follow his lead.  Again, once HP got his attention on something he would like to pursue, he could be quite persistent at it.
HP left us with many deeds worth remembering and particularly his characteristic smile that still hangs in my mind when I first met him years ago.  HP will be sorely missed.

I’m truly saddened by this news.  HP has always been full of energy and enthusiasm for Asian American empowerment and taking action where he saw lack of such.  I recall vividly the event for Grace Meng at his home in Albany, when the very large crowd collapsed his deck in the yard!  Being “out there” in Albany NY, far from the support structure of California-based APAPA, he was nevertheless tireless in doing what he could and has made Albany chapter a success.  I will email Ting Ting and see what we can do to support her and the family.

My deepest condolences to the Wang family.  Many of us had the privilege of working with him in the past when we were once with apapa   He was such a dedicated APIA leader.  It was an honor and privilege to have known him.

                                                                                                                                                      ———— Maeley Tom
It is sad news.  HP is very passionate about empowering APIs.  He is a pioneer, mentor, and unsung hero.  He will be missed.
