SFUSD and SF Public Library
Launch SFPL To Go-Go

A fleet of bookmobiles bring library service to three public school locations and Treasure Island

San Francisco (October 6, 2020) – San Francisco Public Library and San Francisco Unified School District today announced the launch of SFPL To Go-Go, a weekly pop-up pick-up service.

“SFPL To Go-Go is a creative way to help our residents access Library resources while their neighborhood branch remains closed due to COVID,” said Mayor London N. Breed. “The more we can reunite San Franciscans with the books and materials they love, the better.”

On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-6 p.m., the Library’s fleet of bookmobiles will park at Jose Ortega Elementary School, Willie Brown Jr. Middle School and John O’Connell High School and at Treasure Island on Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. Patrons can drop-off Library materials and retrieve holds at each location.

“We are thrilled that our bookmobiles will be hitting the road again to bring library service to the Mission, Bayview and Ocean View neighborhoods,” said Chief of Community Programs & Partnerships Michelle Jeffers.  “Don’t have a library book to pick up yet? You can still stop by for a visit because we’re also giving away lots of free books to keep everyone reading.”

“We are glad to partner with the SF Public Library to expand access to reading materials for all public school students,” SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews said. “All SFUSD students automatically receive a public library card, and students can ask their school librarian for help checking out a book and selecting a site close to them for pick-up. I encourage students to read many genres, both online and in print.”

At all three SFUSD sites, the bookmobile will have access to the schoolyard. Families will not be permitted to enter school buildings. SFPL To Go-Go is curbside pick-up only; students and patrons must reserve materials ahead of time.

How it works…Patrons place a hold through their library accounts for books, DVDs, audiobooks, LPs or any circulating item and select the SFPL To Go-Go site for pick up. Once the holds are ready, patrons will receive an email, print notice or phone call letting them know that their materials are ready. Patrons are welcome to bring their reusable bag, but per health guidelines, they may not be placed on the pick-up table. Bags will be provided for those who do not have them. SFPL employees will operate the bookmobile, and SFUSD school librarians will help facilitate properly distanced curbside pick-up. In more good news, on October 13, the Library will start SFPL To Go service at Chinatown, Ortega and Visatacion Valley branch libraries.
