COVID-19 By Josh Ohea

“In Time of COVID-19” Essay Submission By Josh Ohea

COVID-19

This is the acronym we’ve been hearing every single day for the last five months. It came out of nowhere and has affected everything. As a college student, my life was flipped upside down as my busy days full of studying, socializing and progressing as an artist was forced to drastically change with new challenges to face. But with those challenges came a lot of learning and understanding of what it means to be a good person and how we will never have to go through setbacks on our own.

There was the mandatory shelter in place, order to wear masks and social distance, the decision to shut down most businesses and work from home, and for high school and college students to fully switch to online classes through Zoom. With this came the realization that the world would continue to change drastically and that the only way to get through this pandemic would be for everyone to work together. But thankfully, that’s exactly what people began to do.

A few weeks after being quarantined with my girlfriend at Arizona State University, I traveled back home to the Bay Area and she traveled back home to New York City which at the time was the biggest hotspot of the virus. Even though there was immense worry that came with traveling safely and staying protected, we fortunately returned home safely and were able to be with our families. I was able to reflect back on my own experience and think about some of the things that helped get me through it.

Over time, the world began to realize that everyone was now dealing with the same issues and people started to connect more allowing good news to finally outweigh the bad. Videos and stories of positivity spread faster than the virus ever could of people playing music out on their balconies, making uplifting signs, and donating to those in need. People worked together to help gather food and essential items which they passed out to those who needed a little extra help.

This helped show the world that people were coming together and were not letting the virus overcome everything we have accomplished so far and that there will always be good in the world even in the worst circumstances. As a college student who is still finding his way in the world, it has been so important for my peers and I to be able to hear these stories and not let the negatives overcome us.

With the incredible persistence from nurses and doctors, as well as everyone else who has continued to go to work to help others during the virus, I’ve learned so much about what it means to be human. Being kind, caring, uplifting, and always being there for each other is in our nature and has shown itself as we have worked through this pandemic together. Even though it was scary at first and people didn’t know what was going to happen next, we’ve shown each other that working together and staying positive will always do way more than something like a virus or bad news ever could.
