Santa Clara Showcases Silicon Valley Innovation During Meeting with Taiwan Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun
Ding Ding TV, Calif. — During a meeting with Taiwan Kuomintang Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor highlighted the city’s unique role as Silicon Valley’s economic and innovation center, emphasizing the many similarities between Santa Clara and Taiwan as global hubs of technology, talent, and innovation.
Mayor Gillmor described Santa Clara as “The Center of What’s Possible,” the city’s official tagline. Although home to approximately 130,000 residents, Santa Clara plays an outsized role in the global technology economy.
The Mayor noted that Santa Clara owns and operates Levi’s Stadium, which recently hosted Super Bowl LX and will host six FIFA World Cup matches in 2026. She also highlighted Silicon Valley Power, the city’s municipal electric utility, calling it one of Santa Clara’s greatest strategic advantages.
Santa Clara is home to 57 data centers—the largest concentration of data centers on the U.S. West Coast—and was the site of one of the world’s first modern data centers in 1996. Many of the world’s most influential technology companies, including Nvidia, Intel, AMD, Applied Materials, and early Google operations, have deep roots in the city.
Mayor Gillmor also introduced several major development initiatives, including Related Santa Clara, one of the largest mixed-use developments currently under construction on the West Coast. The project, located across from Levi’s Stadium, is being developed by the same company behind New York City’s Hudson Yards and is expected to transform hundreds of acres into a vibrant new urban district.
Drawing a comparison between Santa Clara and Taiwan, Mayor Gillmor noted that while both are relatively small in size, they have become global leaders in innovation, advanced technology, and talent development.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange ideas and explore future opportunities for collaboration in technology, economic development, innovation, and international engagement.
